In preparing for a record-breaking drive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, James Cameron approached Subsalve the help with two key problems. The first was to maintain safe positioning of the submersible during launch and retrieval operation and the second was to develop a back-up system to return to the surface should primary systems fail.
